How to Break The Conflict Cycle in Your Marriage

family leadership marriage

Are you sick of fighting within your relationships? Do you want to avoid arguing and finally break through to place of level ground with your wife, girlfriend, or friends?

Conflict is a natural and inevitable part of any relationship, including marriage. Addressing and breaking the conflict cycle effectively is critical for maintaining a healthy, strong, and long-lasting union.

However, conflict resolution is not an innate skill; it takes practice, self-awareness, and willingness to learn.

Recently, I had the privilege of hosting as guests on the Raising the Standard Podcast the incredible duo, Tony DiLorenzo, the visionary behind ONE extraordinary marriage, and his wife Alisa, both of whom have co-authored the 6 Pillars of Intimacy book series.

During our conversation, we covered many things, including the importance of conflict resolution.

In this quick post, we will explore the importance of addressing conflict in relationships and provide a few practical strategies to help couples move through their conflict cycle, and discuss the importance of self-leadership, skill development, and self-awareness in solving conflicts in marriage.

Why Addressing Conflict Matters

Unresolved conflicts can be detrimental to the overall health and longevity of a relationship. When couples ignore or fail to address conflicts effectively, they risk causing lasting damage to their connection and may experience irreconcilable differences that lead to separation or divorce.

Being equipped with the necessary tools to address conflict and resolve disputes helps couples strengthen their bond and build a stronger foundation for their marriage.

Strategies for Conflict Resolution

  1. Focus on Self-Awareness and Personal Growth

The first step towards effectively resolving conflict in marriage is to develop self-awareness and take responsibility for personal growth. This involves looking inward and examining one’s own beliefs, emotions, and reactions when faced with conflict.

Acknowledging personal shortcomings and working on self-improvement can help individuals become more effective communicators and empathetic partners in conflict resolution.

  1. Practice Active Listening

Active listening plays a crucial role in conflict resolution. Make a conscious effort to listen intently to your partner, without interrupting or becoming defensive. This demonstrates respect and empathy, and allows both individuals to share their perspectives and feelings openly.

  1. Use "I" Statements

Effective communication involves expressing feelings and thoughts clearly and honestly without blaming or throwing accusations. Utilize "I" statements to express your emotions, needs, and concerns, rather than focusing on your partner’s perceived faults.

  1. Develop Healthy, Constructive Communication Techniques

Learning how to communicate effectively is vital to conflict resolution. Utilize healthy communication techniques, such as avoiding yelling or making sarcastic remarks, as these can escalate tensions and impede progress. Instead, focus on remaining calm and respectful, even in the heat of the moment.

  1. Seek Outside Help When Necessary

Sometimes, conflicts become too challenging to handle alone. In such cases, seeking outside help from a professional marriage counselor or therapist can provide couples with the resources and guidance they need to address and resolve their disputes effectively.

The Importance of Self-Leadership, Skill Development, and Self-Awareness

Developing self-leadership skills and being proactive in personal growth contributes significantly to a successful conflict resolution. By taking ownership of one's own actions and emotions, individuals become better equipped to handle disputes without resorting to blame or defensiveness.

Additionally, consistently working on improving communication skills and resolving conflicts effectively is crucial for a stronger, healthier, and more resilient marriage.

Conflict resolution is a necessary skill for maintaining a thriving marriage, but it’s important to remember it is a learned skill, not something we're born with.

Through self-awareness, personal growth, and healthy communication techniques, couples can successfully navigate their conflict cycle and establish a solid foundation for a stronger, more fulfilling, and more extraordinary marriage.
