Spiritual Warfare for Men: 3 Enemy Tactics You Need to Know
You're going to encounter a battle the moment you decide to follow Christ. Not someday. Not eventually. Now.
If you believe Christianity is primarily about joy, blessing, and breakthrough, you're missing a critical piece. If you think the Christian life centers on evangelism, rest, or God's presence alone, you've got part of the picture—but not the whole one. And if you're missing this piece, I'm telling you straight up, you will be destined to never reach the objective God has for you.
Here's what's glaringly missing across modern Christianity: the reality of warfare.
When you become a Christian, multiple transactions happen simultaneously. You move from death to life. You enter into partnership with Christ. You receive salvation. But here's what most men never hear clearly enough: you are born into conflict. The moment you cross that threshold into the Kingdom of God, the kingdom of darkness puts a target on your back. Before you became a Christian, the enemy did everything in his power to keep you from salvation.
But after you cross that line?
His strategy shifts. He's no longer trying to keep you out. He's now focused on stopping you from entering into everything God has for you.
In one word: growth.
Understanding God's Ultimate Objective
The enemy's number one mission is to arrest your growth because when you mature in Christ, you give Jesus His inheritance. Look at Ephesians 4:13—"Until we all come into the unity of the faith, the stature of a mature man unto the fullness of Christ." God's goal for His church is that we would grow into full stature, full measure, complete maturity. When you reach that maturity, God gets His eternal purpose fulfilled in you.
That's why the enemy mobilizes against it relentlessly.
God’s ultimate objective is clear: the unstoppable increase of His Kingdom within you. Not just positionally—you're already made holy and set apart—but experientially. You must surrender. You must put your flesh on the cross. You must allow Christ to increase until He's not just your Sunday morning co-pilot, but everything. Every decision you make, everywhere you go, how you spend your time—Christ must govern it all.
The enemy understands this. So he comes after you with a playbook. And if you don't recognize his tactics, you'll surrender ground you should never give up.
The Three Enemy Tactics You Must Confront
I'm pulling this from the book of Joshua—a book that's far more than history. It's a battle plan. It's full of spiritual principles that apply to your life right now. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10 that everything Israel experienced was for our learning. Every principle they faced, you face today. There are three primary tactics the enemy deploys against you.
Tactic #1: The Achan Compromise—Hidden Sin in Your Camp
The first tactic is subtle. It's not loud. It's not obvious. It's a hidden compromise.
Achan took something God explicitly commanded him not to take. He tried to hold it back. His pride and his desire wouldn't let him move on from it. Here's the strategic move the enemy makes: he knows he's helpless against you when you maintain your spiritual position. So his primary goal is to get you to compromise in secret. A small sin. A harmless indulgence. Something that brings you comfort. Something that medicates your pain.
That's your point of contamination.
When you harbor hidden sin, it gives the enemy legal ground—a right of accusation. He can tell God, "He's got this secret thing. He can't move in fullness. He's disqualified." And your progress stops cold.
This is what's happening in the Church right now. There's an exposure occurring across every stream—charismatics, evangelicals, other denominational traditions. Sin in the camp is being revealed. And here's the mercy in it: God is giving you a window of opportunity to get things right.
If there's something in your life you need to confront, confront it now. Get rid of it. Don't negotiate with it. Don't rationalize it. Don't think it's too small to matter. It's not. Reach out. Get help. Join a community of men committed to rising to the standard. But whatever you do, eliminate the hidden compromise.
Tactic #2: The Gibeonite Deception—Unholy Alliances
If the enemy can't get you to compromise, he pivots. He'll try to deceive you.
The Gibeonites approached Joshua with a clever story. They pretended to be from a distant land. They made their clothes look worn, their bread look old, and their story sound sympathetic. Joshua and the elders fell into the trap and made a covenant with them that couldn't be broken. For years, this alliance drained resources, diluted their mission, and created thorns in their side.
This is the tactic of the unholy alliance.
Understand this: When God wants to advance you, He sends a relationship. He sends a person. He sends a helper for your destiny. I've experienced this. I've been that person for other men. But here's the counterfeit: when Satan wants to accomplish his purpose in your life, he does the exact same thing. He sends a relationship. A girl. A business partner. A new opportunity. An interesting connection.
Everything becomes about discernment. Is this relationship from the Lord, or will it distract me from the destiny God has for me?
Watch the partnerships you enter. Sharpen your discernment. Every romantic relationship, every business alliance, every significant connection—**bring it to the Lord.** Ask Him directly. Don't let sympathy for someone else's story override God's purpose for your life. An unholy alliance will drain your resources, compromise your mission, and create problems you'll be managing for years.
Don't let it happen.
Tactic #3: The Confederacy of Kings—Open Assault
The third tactic is the most visible. It's open warfare.
When you become a genuine threat to the enemy's agenda—when you start taking significant ground for God's Kingdom—the enemy will do something remarkable. He'll unite forces that would normally never work together. Look at Herod and Pilate. Sworn enemies. But when it came to eliminating Jesus, they became allies. You'll see this pattern repeat in your own life. Strange alliances. Unexpected opposition. Forces determined to stop you.
This open assault is a sign you're being incredibly effective.
But here's what most men miss: When the enemy forms a confederacy against you, God doesn't just break it up randomly. He allows them to bunch together so He can handle them all at once in one decisive victory. God is sovereign over all the enemy's schemes. Your job isn't to figure out how to defend against every attack. Your job is to stay on mission.
That means living a life governed by the Spirit. It means fighting daily battles that make Christ supreme in every situation. It means asking in moments of conflict, "How do I bring the Lord into this? How do I bring this under His authority? How does He become supreme in this practical aspect of my life?"
When you do that, you're advancing. You're taking territory. And the enemy knows it.
The Path Forward: Recognize. Refuse. Advance.
You are enrolled in battle the moment you become a Christian. Call it what it is: clarity. If you think it's all roses and ease, you're setting yourself up for a shipwreck. But here's what makes this war winnable: You are equipped to win.
The enemy's playbook has three main moves: hidden compromise, deceptive alliances, and open assault. When you recognize these tactics, you can refuse to give ground. You can move forward with clarity and conviction.
Every decision you're making this week—in your marriage, your business, your finances, your personal battles—bring it under the Lordship of Christ. Ask what He has to say on the matter. Don't let your ego dominate. Don't let your feelings take control. Make Christ everything in that moment.
The enemy will let you play church. He'll let you join your men's group, sit in the back, read some Bible verses, and go through the motions. But the minute you go after the fullness of God—the minute you say, "I'm ready to go all in on this"—that's when the attack intensifies. Because he's not afraid of you attending services. He's terrified of you taking dominion.
Your Next Move
This isn't theoretical. This is happening in your life right now. You're in a battle that requires a clear mission, a divine strategy, and absolute clarity about the enemy's moves.
Do this: Audit your life for hidden compromise. What small sins are you harboring? What secret indulgences are medicating your pain? Get rid of them! This week.
Second, evaluate your alliances carefully. Who are you in partnership with? Are those relationships advancing God's purpose in your life, or distracting you from it? Be honest. Make adjustments.
Third, expect opposition when you step forward.. When you step into your full potential, opposition will come. Don't be surprised. Don't be discouraged. Recognize it as a sign that you're becoming a genuine threat to the kingdom of darkness. That's when you lean hardest into your partnership with Christ, your alignment with His Word, and your empowerment by His Spirit.
If this speaks to you—and I believe it does—share this with someone. Send it to a brother who's in the trenches. Empower other men to get the knowledge, the equipping, and the clarity they need to walk through life's fires with the right strategy and the right power.
Your destiny isn't determined by the enemy's confederacy. It's determined by your commitment to Christ. Rise to the standard. Take your territory. Finish what God started in you.
The battle is real. But the victory is assured.
Let's get after it.
